Chemical properties
The simplest unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. First found in fusso, it is also found in many kinds of mushrooms and fresh beef. Antibutenedioic acid and maleic acid are geometric isomers of each other, and transbutenedioic acid is heated to 250-300 °C to convert to maleic acid. TBHT also produces mono- and di-based esters or amides, but not monohydryl chlorides. It reacts with phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride to form diacid chloride. Reverse butenedioic acid is oxidized by potassium permanganate to produce racemic tartaric acid.
