Heptanaldehyde is carbonylated from 1-hexene with syngas (CO+H2), and then oxidized by air.

Heptanaldehyde is prepared by carbonylation of heptene-1 and syngas, and then heptanoic acid is obtained by air oxidation. First, the 1-heptene syngas (carbon monoxide + hydrogen), circulating gas and catalyst solution are sent into the carbonylation reactor at a controlled temperature of 94-150°C and a pressure of 1.30MPa. The aldehydes are then fed into the oxidation reactor and oxidized in air at a pressure of less than 0.69 MPa in a hybrid transition metal catalyst system. The aldehydes are almost completely converted, so there is no need for separation and recycling. After the obtained product is removed from the trace catalyst, it is sent to the double-column distillation system, and the recombinant component (which can be used as fuel) is removed in the first tower, and the material at the top of the column is sent to the second tower to obtain the finished branched-chain acid.
